Project Description

Mzalendo Trust is a non-partisan organization that keeps an eye on Kenyan Parliament with a mission to facilitate public participation in Parliamentary processes through Information Sharing, Research and Networking.

The Constitution of Kenya requires public participation in all governance processes including legislation.

Dokeza - Kiswahili for ‘Share your Idea’ is an initiative that facilitates public participation in legislative bill development. Dokeza intends to bridge the public participation gap by providing Kenyans especially those online a platform where they can inform law making and have their views presented in Parliament as a memoranda.

My role was the project lead, coming up with the name and making it work as part of the Mzalendo brand extension, determining the technology and develop a REST API driven website that would allow users to annotate in the legislative bills.

Dokeza has been endorsed by Parliament - National Assembly and the Senate.

Client Review

Mzalendo Trust Verified
Civic technology is a niche area and it is important to find a techie interested in governance matters to collaborate with on developing a project. Jimmy has been a delight to work with as he went the extra mile to read and understand parliamentary business before embarking on coding. As a result, we believe the 'Dokeza' tool developed is responsive to Kenya's law making public engagement needs, thanks to his input.
